Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which was launched alongwith Galaxy Note 3 phablet on 16th September in India, is very useful wearable device. I had the opportunity to use this watch for considerable time at Samsung Smart Cafe in Select City Walk on 5th October. You must have read a lot about this wearable device from the stable of Samsung. But when you wear it and use it in conjunction with Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, then you would really believe it features. This watch is really wonderful and awful to use and flaunt!

To repeat, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch features a 1.63-inch (4.14-cm) Super Amoled display as well as a basic camera, is a perfect companion device and will connect to Samsung’s latest Galaxy devices via wireless Bluetooth technology. It will make calls, display messages, record videos and snap photos, all while the user’s phone stays in their pocket or handbag. When an incoming message requires more than a quick glance, users can simply pick up their Samsung GALAXY devices and the Smart Relay feature will instantly reveal the full content on the screen. Although, the Galaxy Gear battery life of 25 hours is claimed by the company, but the senior executives of Samsung present at the Samsung exclusive store informed that they have used at a stretch of 48 hours, without recharging them. This speaks volumes about this smart watch.

The Galaxy Gear is very light to wear on your wrist. The mot appealing part of this watch is its 1.9 mega pixel camera, which is fixed on its strap and can capture good quality images and also do video recording of maximum 10 seconds. This function is very useful for those users who are on the move or participating in physical activities, and can record both photos and video to create quick, visual records of important information or events from their daily lives, as well as share them on their social networks.

When somebody sends you text message or calls you, the message/call will appear on the dialler and it is upto you to use the dialler of the Gear to read the text if it is small or take call or take it on your Galaxy Note 3.

This watch is very user friendly and with easy swiping on the dialler, you will get the different icons. To start with, the first icon displayed on the screen after its dialler showing time and temperature is :

Notifications, Voice Memo, S Voice, Gallery, Media Controller, Pedometer, Settings, Apps, Logs, Contacts, and lastly the display shows Archive:Contacts,Camera & Dialler and if you press on the icon, it takes to you that application. It is very simple to operate and for instance if you press dialler then the menu appears as of smartphone and you can dial the desired number. We reproduce below some images of above described icons which appeared on the dialler of Gear:

Currently, the Gear works with Galaxy Note 3, but we were given to understand during our interaction with Samsung that they will be providing its connectivity with Galaxy flagship devices in this month and shortly afterwards with other Galaxy devices. By wearing the Galaxy Gear, it reminded me about super Hollywood hero like James Bond, who flaunt very innovative gadgets and who knew that some day Samsung will make those imaginations reality. At Rs. 22,990, it is little bit expensive to start with, but gradually as this wearable technology picks-up, the price will also come down.
