After getting tremendous response to its Xpreia Z smartphone which is being promoted on the plank of dustproof and waterproof features besides others, Sony has realised that waterproofing feature will attract more takers. The company has launched a new smartphone as part of its Xperia series, the Xperia ZR. The unique feature of this handset is its level of water-resistance, which allows photography and Full HD videos underwater.
This phone comes with 13 megapixel rear camera. The waterproof phone is IP55 and IP58 compliant, which means it cane be submerged in 1.5 meters or 4.9 feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. The device can go in only fresh water, so users can’t take it with them into the ocean where saltwater can corrode the phone. It has a dedicated camera key with the waterproof capabilities which lets users shoot videos in Full HD or snap pictures underwater. The front camera is VGA. This phone is also dust-resistant.
“By combining Sony’s leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment,” said Calum MacDougall, Sony’s Mobile Communication’s director of Xperia marketing, in a statement.
Besides the water resistance capabilities, this phone has impressive specifications. The Xperia ZR sports 4.6-inch HD Reality display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels, and is powered by Sony’s own Mobile Bravia engine 2, which the company claims uses the same contrast enhancement technology that is present in Sony’s range of Bravia TVs. The smartphone’s display panel is OptiContrast one which reduces reflections and provides clearer viewing, even in bright sunlight.
This phone runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor with 2GB RAM. It has 8GB storage space, which can be extended upto 32GB via Micro SD card. The device supports 4G LTE, WiFi, and Bluetooth.
The key difference between the Sony’s other flagship smartphone Xperia Z, announced earlier this year, and Xperia ZR is that the new Xperia ZR is more water-resistant and the Xperia Z has a 5-inch screen, compared to 4.6 inch of Xperia ZR.
Xperia ZR will be available in black, white, pink and mint and will be launched worldwide from Q2 2013. Sony has not disclosed the price of this device so far and as usual, will be announced close on the heels of its availability.
