Although Google’s Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system is yet to fully take off, the news of its successor is already doing rounds. Viewing that the adoption of Android 4.0 has fallen short of original expectations and Microsoft will launch Windows 8 in the third quarter of 2012, Google is likely to launch Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) in the second quarter and appeal for adopting Android 5.0 and Windows 8 in the same tablet PC, as reported by a Taiwan based website and this conclusion is arrived at on the basis of feedback received by them from Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Taiwan and China is the major hub for sourcing components and hardware of smartphones, tablets and notebooks and suppliers here know well in advance what is coming next and when.
While Android 4.0 brings a bunch of new features for tablets as well as smartphones, Android 5.0 is likely to be further optimized for tablet PCs. The report states that Google plans to integrate its Chrome system functions to push dual-operating system designs. The report further claims that Google will let vendors add Android 5.0 to a Windows 8-based tablet or notebook, giving them the option to switch between the operating systems without a reboot.
While most of the Android phone manufacturers have updated their Ice Cream Sandwich release schedules, it is yet to see how the OS climbs in popularity in comparison to its closest rival Apple’s iOS 5. Through Android 5.0, Google also wishes to earn another chance to enter the notebook and netbook markets. However, since Android 4.0 did not perform as well as expected, several of Google’s downstream partners are turning conservative about Android 5.0.
