Just in time before we leave behind year 2013 and step into 2014, Twitter has released the trend sheet for Indian users listing top 10 #hashtags under various heads that Indian twitter audience discussed in 2013. Neatly categorizing the topics into “Events”, “News”, “Politics”, “Cricket”, “Bollywood” and “TV”. The complete list showing all the popular tags has been shared below:
India being a cricket crazy nation, I’ll say #ThankYouSachin appearing top in the category “Cricket” isn’t a surprise. Sachin Tendulkar decided the retire from Cricket in 2013 and that did have an impact on entire nation including Twittersphere. You’ll be missed Sachin. Period.
If not Cricket then watching movies and television serial is another thing we love to do! Entertainment all around!! #WeLoveSRK turned out to be the trending topic and I guess Chennai Express is the reason why. Moreover the kind of fan following Shahrukh Khan has, I don’t think he needs a movie to trend on twitter 😉 Under “TV” Big Boss 7 turned out to be the attention seeker. Hmmm… With all sorts of controversies surrounding the show (you know what I am talking about.. ;)) and Sallu bhai hosting the show, its a double whammy for Big Boss 7.
In “News” and “Politics” sections #AfzalGuru and #Modi were the most discussed people, former for all sorts of bad deed and latter for his run for Prime Ministerial candidature. In “News” category #Tejpal ranked second, Tarun Tejpal also garnered a lot of attention even though this unfortunate news broke out at the end of the year 2013 but the perceived horrible nature of the crime angered the Indian tweeters a lot.
Seeing the top trending topics on Twitter, it is evident that Indians on Twitter are concerned about what’s happening around them. I hope Twitter continues to provide a platform for its users to raise their voice, in agreement or disagreement on issues which affect people individually and collectively.
