Indian handsets maker, Intex Technologies has announced today in MWC in Shangahi that they will utilize Sailfish OS 2.0 developed by Jolla, in its devices. Intex Technologies becomes the world’s first licensing partner to utilize Sailfish OS 2.0. Intex is planning to launch its first Sailfish OS 2.0 based smartphone in the last quarter of this year. This phone is speculated to be below Rs. 10,000.
Finland based Jolla, creator of Sailfish OS, is based on the heritage of Meego, an open source operating system developed by ex-employees of Nokia among others. The Sailfish OS also supports majority of Android apps. This means that users of Jolla phone will be able to run their Android applications in addition to Sailfish apps.

As part of Jolla’s BRICS country strategy, Jolla also announced today the formation of Sailfish India, a regional mobile ecosystem for India together with leading Internet and online sales companies Times Internet and Snapdeal.
The aim for Sailfish India is to develop a unique Indian mobile ecosystem, which will lead to greater differentiation in the market with more choices for consumers, higher user satisfaction and better revenues for local businesses. Further Sailfish India partners will be announced later, as stated by Sailfish in its press release.
