Intex To Launch Sailfish OS Based Smartphone By Year End

Indian handsets maker, Intex Technologies has announced today in MWC in Shangahi that they will utilize Sailfish OS 2.0 developed by Jolla, in its devices. Intex Technologies becomes the world’s first licensing partner to utilize Sailfish OS 2.0. Intex is planning to launch its first Sailfish OS 2.0 based smartphone in the last quarter of this year. This phone is speculated to be below Rs. 10,000.

Finland based Jolla, creator of  Sailfish OS, is based on the heritage of Meego, an open source operating system developed by ex-employees of Nokia among others. The Sailfish OS also supports majority of Android apps. This means that users of Jolla phone will be able to run their Android applications in addition to Sailfish apps.

Commenting on its association with Jolla, Mr. Sanjay Kalirona, Head Mobile Business, Intex Technologies said, “We are very excited to be the world’s first licensing partner for Sailfish OS and look forward to utilizing the great user experience of the next generation Sailfish OS 2.0 in our products. Together with the Sailfish India ecosystem partners we believe that we can provide an exciting new choice for smartphone lovers in India and later globally as well. With an open platform like Sailfish OS we have a magnificent opportunity to offer great locally relevant premium content to our customers, all integrated directly into the smartphone’s operating system.”

As part of Jolla’s BRICS country strategy, Jolla also announced today the formation of Sailfish India, a regional mobile ecosystem for India together with leading Internet and online sales companies Times Internet and Snapdeal.

The aim for Sailfish India is to develop a unique Indian mobile ecosystem, which will lead to greater differentiation in the market with more choices for consumers, higher user satisfaction and better revenues for local businesses. Further Sailfish India partners will be announced later, as stated by Sailfish in its press release.
