Galaxy S II Users Receive Firmware Update – Version Pushed To Gingerbread XWLA1

The moment I saw that software update reminder, I got my hopes high, hoping that I’ll be able to finally use Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy S II! But they aren’t as fast as I unthinkingly hoped for.

Anyhow, Samsung released a “minor” firmware update for their Galaxy S II (GT I9100G) users (in India), pushing installed version to Gingerbread XWLA1. Being a minor update primarily for bug fixes and improvements, it is duly available Over The Air and via Samsung KIES.

Do note that OTA installation shows ~50 MB of download size but KIES seems to download entire updated firmware which almost weighed 500 MB (somewhere near this).

Regarding the per se improvements, the most obvious change is the lock screen (swipe to unlock – refer screenshot’s) and the blue highlight which appears when scrolling isn’t possible has been tuned down (looks neat  now!).

  1. Try connecting your phone with USB mode and see if it connects with your pc. Otherwise, the best way out is to reinstall the android os using KIES. This will restore your device but you’ll get rid of this problem.

  2. I faced the similar problem after upgrading the firmware… try performing a factory data reset in privacy option, it worked for me. reset and reboot the phone.. Also backup all ur data before you do that.

  3. Hi All,

    I have Samsung Galaxy S2.

    Model number, GT-I9100G
    Android version, 2.3.6
    Baseband version, I9100GDDKL1
    Kernel version, 2.6.35.7 root@DELL128#2
    Build number, GINGERBREAD.XWLA1

I updated the software and since then I have been facing issues while connecting the phone to pc. On my phone I can see MTP connected but the phone is not detected on my pc. Kies software is unable to detect the phone as well. This started only after updating the software Over The Air which Samsung claimed to have improved stability. I even tried connecting through USB utilities. In any case, I don’t get any error message. I am neither unable to tether the phone through USB.

Please help me solve this issue. It is very frustrating and scary. Also please advice on an Android Ice-cream Sandwich version release for users in India.

    Regards,
    Chirag
