Samsung has launched two premium smartphones – Galaxy Note 5 & Galaxy S6 edge+, which takes their design and material mix from the highly successful Galaxy S6 and S6 edge which were inroduced in the month of April. The Galaxy S6 and edge variant were well-received in the global markets and Samsung has added more features in the newly launched devices to make it more attractive and appealing. Some critics may well say it is old wine in new botttle, but that is the game in smartphones segment to improve upon the earlier models with more features.
Both the devices – Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ have similar hardware specifications except design of display of S6 edge+ and revamped S Pen of Galaxy Note 5.
The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ feature 5.7-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) Super-Amoled displays with a pixel density of 515ppi. These devices run on the latest Android 5.1 (Lollipop) OS. Both the devices are powered by an Octa core (2.1GHz Quad + 1.5GHz Quad), 64 bit architecture, processor, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and options of 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, without the capability to extend it further. The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ will support 4G LTE Cat. 9 or Cat. 6 modems depending upon the global markets.
Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are fueflled by a 3,000mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging technology compatible with virtually any wireless pad available today. According to Samsung, with wired charging, both devices can be fully charged in approximately 90 minutes, and through Samsung’s latest wireless charger, they can be fully charged in approximately 120 minutes.
The Galaxy Note 5 is a bit slimmer with a narrower bezel and curved back to provide a more comfortable grip and it can be easily operated with one hand . The oversized, flat screen is easy to write on and better optimized with a 5×5 grid home screen.
The Galaxy Note 5 comes with improved S Pen. While the previous version featured enhanced handwriting capabilities, increased pressure sensitivity and support for pivot, speed and tilt, the latest has been designed to be more solid and balanced in the user’s hand. It can be used just like a ball pen. It has a “push-pull” design and ejects more easily from the device, requiring only a quick click.
In the Galaxy Note 5, one can jot down on the screeen with S Pen even when the screen is off without even unlocking the phone. It also comes with updated Air Command feature that shows a hovering icon for quick access to stylus tools from any screen at any time. Moreover, users can also annotate on PDF files and capture lengthy web articles or long images at once with the help of Scroll capture feature.
Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ incorporates ‘Apps edge’ for easy access to favorite apps, and enhanced ‘People edge’ for easy communications with preferred contacts. ‘Apps edge’ allows users to access their favorite apps by just swiping the edge display. ‘People edge’ helps users to connect their close contacts easily. From the edge screen, users can quickly find their pre-set contacts and send message or give a call directly.
Both the new smartphones are equipped with 16-megapixel rear cameras with an f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilisation, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung’s advanced camera system on both the devices feature Quick Launch, which means that by double clicking the home button, the camera will be launched in less than one second. The camera also has improved video capabilities such as Steady Video, which provides Video Digital Image Stabilization on both the front and rear cameras for sharp, crisp video on-the-go, and Video Collage Mode, which allows users to record and edit short videos easily in various frames and effects.
The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 also feature 4K(UHD) video filming and Live Broadcast, which lets users instantly live streams Full HD video straight from the phone to any individual, group of contacts, or even the public through YouTube Live.
Both the devices have SideSync feature, which allows for the easy transfer of content from the Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ to a PC or tablet. Effortless installation and automatic connection between devices make tasks like accessing files or checking phone notifications on a PC incredibly easy.
Another very useful feature on these two devices is Samsung Pay, which initially will be available on Korea and US. It is a simple and safe mobile payment service you can use virtually anywhere where cards are accepted. With tokenization, Samsung KNOX, and fingerprint authentication, Samsung Pay provides a secure payment system and reduces the security risks inherent to plastic cards.
Another very useful feature available on the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ is that you can add physical keyboard on these devices for fast typing, at an additional cost. Samsung has not disclosed the price of this keyboard or the devices so far. The physical keyboard can be adjusted on top of the devices display. Although it will block almost half of the display but will prove handy for those who are required to send lot of text messages and other writing outputs. The moment keyboard is put on the display, the phones will recognize it and adjust its user interface accordingly. No need for bluetooth or additional battery for this keyboard.
If you are in the market for premium smartphone and want to have bigger screen then you cannot ignore salient features of Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.
