Alongside the launch of Galaxy S5 smartphone, Samsung has also introduced its three wearable devices in India – Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo smartwatches and Gear Fit band. Galaxy Gear 2 is priced at Rs. 21,900/- and both Galaxy Gear 2 Neo and Galaxy Gear Fit are priced at Rs. 15,900/- each. These devices will also be available across India through Samsung’s retail stores and e-commerce sites on April 11, 2014.
Samsung had unveiled all the above three wearable devices and Galaxy S5 at the recently concluded MWC. This foray into wearable devices by Samsung indicates that the next area to be explored is wrists of the mobile consumers.
Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear 2 Neo smartwatches run on Samsung’s own Tizen Operating Systems. The earlier version of Samsung Gear smartwatch was running on Google’s Android OS.The original version of Galaxy Gear did not get the desired response from the market the way Samsung had expected.
The other major change brought by Samsung on its new Gear 2 smartwatch is that unlike its original version, the new Gear 2 has 2.o Mega Pixel Auto Focus camera fixed to the main body instead on strap. There is no camera for Gear 2 Neo. Both of these smartwatches feature 1.6” Super AMOLED (320×320) display, and are powered by 1.0 GHz Dual Core processor, coupled with 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal memory.
These smartwatches are IP67 dust and water resistant. These two devices are fuelled by a 300mAh battery. The Gear 2 measures 36.9 x 58.4 x 10.0 mm, and weighs 68g, whereas Gear 2 Neo measures 37.9 x 58.8 x 10.0 mm, and weighs 55g.
To bring vibrancy to the smartwatches and to express their mood or coordinate with the outfit of the users who are fashion conscious, these watches come with modern and sophisticated strap color options including Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange for Gear 2 and Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange for Gear 2 Neo. The home screen background, clock face and font are also customizable to reflect the personal taste of the wearers.
Both these smartwatches allow users to accept or ignore incoming calls and messages, and provide instant notification options based on a user’s activity and habits. The other useful feature of these smartwatches is that they can controll electronic products such as TV, and settop box through WatchON Remote application. They also offer personal fitness coaching in real time, allowing users to develop a customizable fitness routine and monitor their heart rate in order to improve the users overall well-being.
Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are compatible with more than dozens of Samsung Galaxy smartphones.
The Gear Fit wristband is claimed by Samsung to be industry’s first curved, Super AMOLED wearable device for the health-conscious customers. The Gear Fit features a 1.84-inch Super AMOLED display with a 432 x 128 pixel resolution, and comprises of a pedometer, heart rate monitor, and a sleep monitor. According to Samsung, the Gear Fit is more than an everyday fitness band as it keeps consumers up to date with instant notifications from Galaxy smartphones such as incoming calls, emails, SMS, alarm, S-planner, 3rd party apps while consumers are on the m0ve. This device has changeable straps and will be available in Black, Orange and Mocha Grey colors.
The Gear Fit is also dust and water proof, and is powered by a 210mAh battery, which gives a typical usage of 3 to 4 days, and up to 5 days with low usage. The device measures at 23.4 x 57.4 x 11.95 mm (body only) and weighs 27 grams.
