Corning Gorilla Glass 3 & Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass Announced For Mobile Devices

To motivate domestic companies to use Corning Gorilla Glass on their smartphone devices, Corning has announced today two of its latest glass technologies in India, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance and Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass.

IMG_1362Corning Gorilla Glass has now almost become an industry standard for mobile devices and this technology is currently used by more than 33 major brands on their 2,400 product models. As of today, more than 2.4 billion devices today come equipped with Corning Glasses. The leading global companies like Samsung,HTC,LG,Acer,Asus,Lenovo,Dell,HP etc, are using Cornilla Glass on majority of their devices.

Corning Gorilla Glass, which is manufactured in the United States, Korea, and Taiwan, has now focussed its attention on Indian market as many Indian companies have taken great stride in smartphones and tablets. Corning is based in USA and started manufacturing Gorilla Glasses in 2007. They are doing lot of Research and Development and spends around 10% of their total sales on R&D.

According to Corning Technologies India, many top domestic device makers have already adopted Corning Gorilla Glass for use in their smartphones and the company is in discussions with other makers to adopt their Glass on their smart devices. Corning Gorilla Glass is known for its scratch-resistance capabilities and is manufactured using Corning’s proprietary fusion draw process, which result in its smooth surface, thinness, and optica clarity, and is ideally suitable for touch-enabled devices.

IMG_1360Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance (NDR)announced today is the latest from the stable of Corning, and offers all of the attributes Gorilla Glass is known for while offering improved scratch resistance.Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR, is capable of withstanding the deep scratches and cracks that normally result in failure of the glass.Corning Gorilla Glass 3 NDR offers the same durability and thinness as Corning Gorilla Glass 2, but the latest version of the Glass offers improvements in the glass composition at the atomic level. As a result, the Gorilla Glass 3 has improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility and improved retained strength if a scratch occurs.

Corning Technology revealed very interesting fact at an event in New Delhi, that we use smartphone devices quite often, but do not clean it at all and hence majority of our devices have bacteria on it. The company demoed a process of calculating bacteria process on a smartphone. To prevent the accumulation of bacteria on the smart devices, Corning has also introduced Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass, which is world’s first antimicrobial cover glass. As stated by the company, this product combines the renowned benefits of Corning Gorilla Glass technology, including durability, scratch resistance and toughness, with a built-in antimicrobial property to last the lifetime of the display cover glass. This technology is based on ionic silver, which is embedded in the glass forming a reservoir of ionic silver that makes it long lasting with no degradation of antimicrobial activity through the lifetime of the device.

The other key advancemetns made by Corning is that they have made their Glass thinner and lighter. In 2010, they launched a 1mm Corning Gorilla Glass, and subsequently reduced its thickness by 60%. Today the thickness of their Glass is 0.4mm. But they are offering the same durability. Besides this, Corning Glass has been improved a lot to be Antireflective and comes with Easy-to-clean Technology to improve device readability in bright sunlight. Moreover, 3D-Shaped Gorilla Glass is also available to support the emerging demand for 3D curved glass for smartphones and wearable devices.
