Install Android 2.2 (Froyo) On Samsung Galaxy 5 I5500/I5503, Without Rooting!

I have had a chance to play with Samsung Galaxy 5 I5503, a Google Android 2.1 running device. Unfortunately Galaxy 5 I5503 hasn’t qualified to get Froyo update (Android 2.2) although it should have, no compatibility issues. Anyway, I was determined to get Android 2.2 running on my Galaxy 5 and was successful too! A big thanks to Samfirmware for Android 2.2 firmware for Galaxy 5 series phones (I5500/I5503).

The process to install (I know this tutorial is a bit late) and get Android 2.2 running on your Galaxy phone is very easy. Just follow the following mentioned points in order and your mobile phone will soon enjoy all the features of Android Froyo update!

Files You Need To Have Before Installing Android 2.2:

Process To Flash Your Samsung Galaxy 5:

  1. You must have downloaded all the files mentioned above and have them ready to use.
  2. Backup all the contents of your phone memory with KIES or using Mobile Back Up II (available for free on Android App Store).
  3. Reset your phone to factory settings (Not compulsory but advised).
  4. Make sure the battery is fully charged up.
  5. Switch Off your Galaxy 5 (I5503/I5500). Remove battery and re-insert after a few seconds.
  6. Press the following buttons together:
    • Volume Down Button + Center Home Button (Big square) + Power Button
  7. Wait for “Downloading” screen to appear. Once this screen comes up release the buttons and connect your phone with computer using original data cable.
  8. Now wait for your computer to install device driver (until it shows “the device is ready to use”). In the mean time extract the I5500LUYJP2.rar file which will give you a I5500LUYJP2 folder with I5500LUYJP2.tar file in it.
  9. Now open ODIN Downloader (downloaded above), if the phone connection is successful the box under COM Port Mapping will turn to yellow. Select the following check boxes (as shown in screenshot below):
    • One Package, Auto Reboot and Protect Ops check-boxes.
    • Select the Ops file (downloaded above).
    • Select the tar package downloaded above.
  10. Cross check the settings and hit “Start”.

That’s it! In approximately 5 minutes your device will restart and boot into Android 2.2 with beautiful icons and lot many new features 🙂

If you face any problem then do leave a comment below, I’ll try my best to answer it to the best of my knowledge.

In case you mess up or something stuck for you then download the original firmware for Samsung Galaxy 5 I5503 using this link and follow the exact steps from point number 5. This should restore your device back to Android 2.1.

Note: This process is based on my personal experience and since every device is different hence you are on your own while flashing your device. I, or any other author of TechVorm will NOT be responsible for any loss caused due to this. However, I’ll be happy to help you if need be.

i tried flashing it several times but no improvement.
i tried different firmwares but still doesn’t work. any tips?
i dont wanna go to the samsung center xD

  12. First flash your phone with android 2.2 and then follow this guide. This is a common problem. And usually it takes 2-3 minutes to finish with flashing.

  13. Hi paritosh,
Is it at all possible to get the telstra samsung galaxy 5 GT-I5503T stock firmware. I put cyanogen mod on it following your guide but I misunderstood and assumed that titanium backup would let me restore my stock firmware if I decided I didnt like the cm7, but it seems to only restore apps not whole firmware. I am getting hassled by my daughter as the foxtel will no longer work so I would love to restore the stock firmware. I appreciate any help you can give me.
    Regards
    Melanie

  16. hey, can you give me a working link to the froyo firmware, ill try it before going to 2.3 coz that how the other guys did it when they experienced problem with installing 2.3 right?

  17. Shouldn’t be happening. Did you disconnect your device during this process? Normally the phone restarts within 2-3 minutes.

As for a solution, first Factory reset your device and then try to install Froyo. I can’t guarantee that it’ll work but it’s worth a shot 🙂

  27. A lot of readers have complained about this problem. Though I did not get this particular problem but since majority of them are expressing their concern over the same, I guess this is a common issue. All I can suggest is to format your device and then see if problem persists.

  28. After keying *#*#7780#*#* am not able to reset. Still its showing the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
    Force Close

  29. The link to original firmware is mentioned in the article above. It isn’t an image file. You to put the files individually in “Select Images To Load”.

  30. now 2.2 is working properly but some function not working like GPRS .so when i download orginal frimware .in which image file is not there by which flashing is not started. pleae give me a proper link for orginal frimware of 5503

  31. That’s because it was flashed with Android 2.2 firmware of I5500. Android 2.2 is not available for I5503. And after installing this new firmware, reset your phone to get rid of this error.

  32. upgrade sucessfully but phone is showing name of model is incorrect i5500 insted of i5503
and process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly..pls try again

  33. Swype doesn’t work. Sorry ’bout that. And bluetooth error is the first time I’ve heard about. Try to reset your phone to factory settings and see if bluetooth works okay.

  34. hey i am done with this steps…but now phone is showing process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly..pls try again////what should i do now????

here is a solution guys just reset phone setting by typing keypad *#*#7780#*#*

  35. I will try that…anyway, i found one other problem..(Please dont feel bothered..i am just worried 🙁 ) Bluetooth doesnt work..it force closes when trying to transfer or receive files.. and what about swype?

  36. hey same error i had mentioned earlier…try to change some network setting..like use 2g network only and etc..and remove ur current sim card and insert other card..then swith on ur mbl..and then once again insert ur old sim card…i dont knw what exactly solve error..but i had tried above things,,and one of them worked with me,,,and froyo is working..

  37. after the flash… my I5500 is now android froyo but there’s an error that pop up;
    Sorry!
The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
    Force Close

what needs to be done now…?

  38. i came up with one disadvantage,,of froyo..i am not able to decrease volume when mbl is in stand bye mode/lock mode..it is possible to increase and decrease volume in lock mode in eclair…

  39. music players? There’s only one music player. And if music player isn’t showing any tracks then format the mmc (take backup) and then transfer songs. See if it helps.

  40. hey flash it one more time,,it will be okay..i also faced same problem,,but i tried it once again,,walla it worked,,,so will suggest u to flash your phone once again…

  43. By higher version you mean Android 2.3, right? The fact is I haven’t yet come across any custom rom for installing android 2.3 in Galaxy 5 I55xx. So can’t comment whether Android 2.3 will actually work or not. But I am as anxious as you are to if it’ll work or not ;)work or not. But I am as anxious as you are to if it’ll work or not 😉

  44. will it support higher version then froyo???i just want to know…if we install higher version ,,what will be problem???just asking due to my curiosity..pls dont mind it..

  46. In the notification drop down bar, on the extreme right there is an option to turn on/off auto rotate. Just tap on it once and turn it on. It is working fine for me.

  47. Is it working now? Did your phone have full battery? You restore it to original version by downloading firmware for I5503 and then try to flash it again.

  48. hye..wanna ask u..is it a normal problems if the setting for ‘auto-rotate screen’ not being ‘auto-rotate’?cuz im always must click the button, eventhough i already click,it till appear not click..afte a while…y?pls advice..thnx

  50. Yes, I am using it now without any problems. You might need to change language settings to English but that’s about it. No other problem.

  51. hey,,i am going to do it with my galaxy 5 I5503..you are using it now???does it make any problem or not??i want to knw before i install it..

  52. Once you connect your phone with computer using USB, your computer will detect the device automatically and will start installing drivers. Just wait for it to finish installing drivers.

  53. hye..

already follow the step dat u give, but im stuck at the step no 8..can u explain more detail for diz steps?thanx

  54. You’ll have to do some guess work here.
    1. Go to menu and look for settings icon (blue colored circle, as was in Android 2.1)
    2. From the end tap on 5th tab (it’s of Language Settings).
    3. Tap on 1st tab and select “English”.
