Nokia Retains Its Leadership Position With 23% Market Share In India

Nokia is connecting well with Indian customers and this news will bring huge sigh of relief for troubled Nokia. As per CyberMedia Research, India’s mobile handsets sales crossed 50.2 million units in the Jan-March quarter, up 9.1 % from the like period of the previous year. “In the overall India mobile handsets market, Nokia retained leadership position with 23 % share, followed by Samsung at second position with 14.1 % and Micromax at third position with 5.8 % in terms of sales (unit shipments),” it added.

The smartphone sales touched 2.7 million units during the period under review with Samsung emerging as the leader with 40.4 % market share followed by Nokia and RIM with 25.5 % and 12.3 % shares respectively. Shipments of multi-SIM handset category continued to rise, accounting for as much as 67.7 % of total shipments during the quarter.

While, Nokia is still popular as vendor of feature phones and Samsung is clearly the leader of smartphones in India. As blogged by us earlier in various contexts, Nokia has been left behind in smartphone segment by delusion of Android phones especially of Samsung. But the heartening news is that Nokia is still connecting well with feature phones in India and its presence in smartphone segment is number two.

Nokia’s hardware cannot be matched by any vendor and only problem with Nokia is that it is late entrant into smartphone segment and that too with new and untested Windows O/S. Had Nokia decided to use Android O/S in its smrtphones then it would have created history and probably some other vendors would have vanished by now. With Nokia present in every nook and corner of the country, its shake-hand with Android would have been lethal like an atom bomb. But alas that was not to be !

Still, Nokia has lot of products to keep its position intact not only in India but in China and other emerging markets.
