Samsung Introduces Galaxy Mega 6.3, Galaxy Mega 5.8 Mammoth Smartphones

After stupendous success of its Galaxy Note series of smartphones, South Korean giant has introduced the supersized 5.8 -inch and 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega smartphones, saying the two phones provide an “optimal viewing experience.”

The South Korean company said the line “combines the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet”. “We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more,” said CEO and head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business, Jong-kyun Shin.

The Galaxy Mega phablets will be released in May in Europe and Russia, and the prices will be announced close on the heels of official launch. According to Samsung, a LTE-variant of the Galaxy 6.3 will be released as well. There is  no word yet on when the phones will be launched in India or their pricing.

The Galaxy Mega devices will be two of the largest smartphones out on the market. Until now, the Huawei’s Ascent Mate, with a 6.1-inch screen, was regarded as having the largest smartphone display. Probably, Samsung wants to steal the thunder from Huawei and with its aggressive marketing campaign and huge amount at its disposal, they are going to be successful with these mammoth smartphones also.

The Galaxy Mega phones are equipped with an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera. Both the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and 5.8 run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and supports 64GB of expandable memory . Both have dual-core processors — 1.7GHz for the 6.3 inch version and 1.4GHz for the smaller model — while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 supports LTE.

The devices feature Group Play, which allows users to share content across up to eight devices on the same Wi-Fi network; Samsung WatchON TV remote control functionality; Samsung Link for streaming content to a TV, tablet or computer; and S Translator which provides text or voice translation. They also feature split-screen capability.

One of the key reasons for the gigantic screens, which are only about an inch smaller than many popular tablets, is multitasking. Samsung wants to give users enough room to be able to run two apps on their smartphones at the same time comfortably. But despite their mammoth screens, the Galaxy Mega smartphones are still light, thin and portable. The 5.8-inch model weighs in at 6.4 ounces while the 6.3-inch Mega weighs 7.0 ounces.
