Samsung’s Optimistic Target For 2013 – Ship 500 Million Handsets

Smartphones leader Samsung of Korea has set optimistic target for year 2013, after its huge success of Galaxy range of smartphones throughout the globe. Despite, Samsung’s patent war with tech giant Apple Inc., Korean giant has moved ahead and has set very ambitious target for its smartphones and feature phones in the coming year. As reported by Taiwanese website Digitimes, Samsung Electronics aims to ship 500 million handsets in 2013, of which 350 million will be smartphone models, according to industry sources, citing an internal estimate by Samsung.

The above target is achievable keeping in view of the fact that Samsung’s Galaxy range of devices are hot selling cakes and as per rumors the company is going to expand its Galaxy range and the same will be showcased in the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in Spain in February 2013.

Samsung’s Galaxy range of smartphones are so popular in emerging markets like India that it has been able to sell more than 10 million Galaxy devices in India alone since its first launch of Galaxy S in June 2010. “Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratise the smartphone experience in the Indian market,” Samsung VP (Mobile) Asim Warsi told PTI.

Though the company declined to comment on individual contribution of a particular device, Galaxy Y series, Note series and S III together contributed more than 50 per cent of the sales.

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR) India Mobile Handsets Market Review, India shipments of mobile handsets was recorded at 102.43 million units during January-June 2012. Of the smartphones market of 5.50 million units, Samsung had a 41.6 per cent share, while Nokia and Research in Motion had 19.2 per cent and 12.1 per cent share, respectively. Apple’s iPhone has negligible presence in India.

Above data is quite encouraging for Samsung and if they have plans for 500 million handsets for 2013 then India will have major share of their new and existing devices. Year 2013 will also be fruitful for Samsung and its competitors will take this massive target with a pinch of salt.
