Indian handsets maker Spice has announced today that it will be launching Firefox OS smartphones in India in the month of July. The company has partnered with Mozilla to unveil the smartphones running on their Firefox OS. These smartphones will be very economical and shall be targeted towards the affordable segment and first time smartphone buyers. Although the company has not disclosed the exact prices of these Firefox OS smartphones, but it is expected to be in the range of Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000.
Besides Spice, another Indian company Intex has also partnered with Mozilla to launch their range of smartphones running on Firefox OS in India.
So far, Spice has not shared the hardware details of their upcoming Firefox OS smartphones but has revealed that these smartphones will support 100% HTML5 and will be enabled with dual SIM dual standby mode, which is particularly important for emerging markets such as India.
Just to remind our readers, Mozilla had introduced Firefox OS at Mobile World Congress last year. This OS is claimed to be intuitively designed and can perform basic functions such as making a call and text messaging, to video and music, photo and video capturing, application download as well as customizing one’s own Internet experience with adaptive application search. The Spice phones will have the Firefox Marketplace with applications such as Pinterest, LINE, Facebook and Twitter. These are the basic applications which the first time users desire in a smartphone.
