Xiaomi of China has forayed into virtual reality (VR) segment and announced today its very first VR headset, Mi VR Play. This is an entry-level headset that seeks to bring the VR experience to a much wider audience. Mi VR Play is set to make a huge impact in China where VR is still in its infancy.
Xiaomi offered Mi VR Play for beta testing on 1 August and received 1 million registrations in just 8 hours. The beta testing program allows users to purchase Mi VR Play for just RMB 1 (US$0.15).
Xiaomi will announce its final price details and availability of Mi VR Play beyond the beta testing program, at a later date. It will certainly carry a disruptive price tag.
Mi VR Play is lightweight gadget and made of durable Lycra for long-lasting comfort. In the future, Mi VR Play will also be available in a selection of bold prints and colours. Its unique two-way zipper helps to ensure compatibility, providing a secure grip on a wide range of 4.7- to 5.7-inch smartphones. At the same time, the dual openings on the front allow for slight positioning adjustments and ventilation.
Xiaomi has also laucnhed the Mi VR app, an open platform incorporating an extensive library of content from partners such as Conde Nast Traveler, YouKu and Korea’s Dooribun. As more partners are brought onboard Mi VR app, introducing even more panoramic, 2D and 3D content, it is expected to drive VR content in China to a whole new level as claimed by Xiaomi.
