Xiaomi today announced that it will plant over 1.8 lakh trees to save river Cauvery in partnership with the Cauvery Calling initiative by Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation.
Xiaomi has further announced that they have donated INR 76.5 Lakhs to Cauvery Calling to join hands with the initiative to save the river which supports lives of 84 million people. With 1.8 lakh trees, Xiaomi will plant 100 trees for each day of its five year existence in India from Q3 2014 to Q3 2019. This is an extension to the brand’s philosophy of always giving back to the country and its people, which have been extremely supportive of the brand’s growth in the market as furhter stated by Xiaomi in its press statement.
In the last year, the suffering of farmers and their suicides in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the Cauvery basin has significantly increased. Cauvery has depleted over 40% in the last 70 years and 87% of the basin’s original tree cover has been lost. Not just that, during the summer, Cauvery is unable to reach the ocean and over 70% of Cauvery basin’s soil suffers erosion as communicated by Xiaomi.
Appreciating the support of Xiaomi and its Global VP Manu Jain, Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation said, “Cauvery has been the source of wellbeing, prosperity & the very source of life for these lands. A forest-fed perennial river is fast becoming a seasonal stream as 87% of tree cover has been lost in 50 years. A land with rich soil and abundant water is the best gift we can offer to future generations. We appreciate the support and generous contribution to Cauvery Calling from Xiaomi. May their generation contribution and support to Cauvery Calling inspire many a youth to come forward and become part of this movement.”
He further shared, “Cauvery Calling is an economic plan for the farmers and an ecological plan for the nation which will revitalize soil, water and agriculture in Cauvery basin and transform the lives of 84 million people. Cauvery Calling is not any one organisation’s or individual’s work; it’s a generational work. If we successfully implement this, then it will be a game-changer for India and the whole tropical world.”
Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India said, “Xiaomi is a brand built on our consumers love and support. Hence, we have always stood by the country whenever our people needed us. Sadhguru is leading this beautiful initiative of saving the land with rich soil and helping make a better future for tomorrow. We at Xiaomi resonate with the same, and hence have planted 1.8 lakh trees ~ 100 trees for each day of our five year chapter in India to build a better tomorrow. We also request our entire Mi Fan community to come forward and participate in the cause.”
