Motorola has been very succesful with its Moto range of smartphones from Moto E to Moto X Style. In order to bring novelty to its latest iteration, Motorola has introduced Shatter Proof display in the Moto X Force smartphone. We do face embrassing situations when the phone accidentally slips from our hand and falls on the ground. What happens then? Our heart starts beating if the device is expensive and in majority of the cases, this accident makes us poorer by few thousand rupees as the display of any device is quite expensive.
To address the issue of screen getting damaged, Motorola has come out with Moto X Force. I was invited by the company to their launch event near Delhi to witness its sturdiness and drop the phone from considerable length to see its impact. In this article, I shall not delve into details about other aspects of the phone, which we shall be covering in our detailed review later on when the company sends us the device.
The Moto X Force looks like Moto X Style when you hold it. It has volume rocker and power button on the right and slim slot and headphone jack have been provided on the top edge of the phone. MicroUSB port is given at the botttom edge. The Moto X Force has curved design and its back has ballistic nylon finish which not only gives it impressive look but is easy to grip. It is available in Black and Grey color. This phone also comes in White color with a durable soft-grip surface with an easy-grip triangle pattern.
The major highlight of Moto X Force is that it features a shatterproof display. This is the world’s first phone screen guaranteed not to crack or shatter. This is an exclusive Moto ShatterShield display technology consisting of five layers designed from materials that absorb shock from impact and are guaranteed not to shatter. This has been made possible because according to Motorola, the screen comes with five different layers, starting with a layer of plastic that covers the display. The display of this phone is flexible and is capable of bending on getting impact and absorbs shock instead of shattering, which saves the screen. Moreover there is back-up of dual-touch layer. If something goes wrong with the first touch layer then the second layer comes to the rescue of the screen.
To vouch the claim of the company, we did drop test at the launch event and dropped the phone repeatedly on the hardened surface from more than eight feet. To our great surprise, the screen of the phone survived but there were scratches on the edges of the phone and also slight dents, which is quite obvious. You can save the screen of this phone from major accidents but its other body will cerrtainly gives the look of a accidental device, which you can’t avoid. But this device will be a boon for those who are in the habit of falling their device quite often.
Besides shatterproof feature, the 5.4-inch AMOLED screen with a Quad HD resolution of 1440×2560 with a pixel density of 540 ppi is also quite impressive. It provides vibrant and sharp colors and decent viewing angles.
Besides, its shatterproof display, this phone has also impressive hardware under the hood. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, clocked at 2 GHz with Adreno 430 GPU paired with 3 GB of RAM and internal storage of 32GB and 64GB, which are further extendable to 2TB via a microSD card slot.
The other highlight of this phone is its massive 3760mAh battery, which is claimed to have up to 30+ hours of battery life depending upon the usage. It comes with the world’s fastest 25W TurboPower charger in the box, with which you can get up to 13 hours of power in just 15 minutes.
On the optics front also, Moto X Force boasts of 21 MP rear-camera with an f/2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash. It also incorporates Phase Detect Autofocus feature. This phone also houses a 5 MP front-facing snapper with flash and an f/2.0 aperature. Of late, Motorola has done lot of enhancements on its camera front and after providing good cameras on Moto X Play and Moto X Style, Motorola has certainly taken this legacy forward. We tested the camera briefly and found the resulst to be sharp, detailed with depth. However, when we receive the device, we would like to test the camera in different lighting conditions to pass the judgement. But going by the previous record of Motorola, the camera of this phone will also turn out to be a true winner.
To sum up, the Moto X Force is really very solid and good looking phone. It is not bulky and weighs only 169 grams. Its screen is unbreakable and Motorola is confident about its technology and is giving four years warranty on the display. Its other hardware features are also solid. On the down side, this phone is Single SIM device and runs on Android Lollipop 5.1 OS but this will be updated to Marshmallow OS. This phone supports 4G LTE Indian bands but does not come with fingerprint scanner, which has almost become a standard feature even on budget phones.
The main question arises whether you would spend Rs. 50,000 for shatterproof display feature. There is no doubt that Motorola has set a benchmark for flagship phone to have unbreakable display and in the coming months, you will see many established brands to embrace this feature in one way or the other in their devices.
