Oppo A37 versus Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016)

Most of the times, it becomes very difficult to choose a good phone from variety of options available nowadays. Their was time when the choices in a particular segment of prices were limited. Of late, with the arrival of Chinese phones with decent hardware, build quality, the consumers have the option to look at these devices also besides the established brands of Samsung, HTC, LG etc.

Recently, the reputed Chinese brand Oppo has launched mid-range A37 smartphone with emphasis on its camera features. In this article, we would like to compare Oppo A37 with the updated Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) smartphone which was launched in India in the month of May this year.

Both Oppo A37 and Galaxy J5 (2016) have majority of same features as far as processor and storage capabilites are concerned. Both of these devices are packed with 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which is further extendable to 128GB via microSD card. The similarities end here.

The Galaxy J5 (2016) comes with 5.2-inch Super AMOLED screen with HD resolution of 720×1280 pixels compared to 5 inch HD IPS display of the A37 with resolution of 720×1280 pixels with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, which is missing on the new Galaxy J5. The Galaxy J5 (2016) is packed with 3100mAh battery compared to 2630mAh battery given on the A37. The new J5 runs on the latest Android Marshmallow OS with Samsung’s own Touchwiz on the top and the A37 runs on ColorOS 3.0 based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Both the devices are compatible with 4G LTE Indian bands.

We have observed considerable difference as far as camera capabilities of both the phones are concerned. If you simply go by megapixel count then certainly, the Oppo phone lags behind. But in performance and software features, the rear and front cameras of A37 are quite decent and competes with Samsung’s J5.

The Oppo A37 has 5 MP front camera with a 1/4-inch sensor and OmniBSI+ (backside illumination). Its large 1.4um pixels is the biggest available in this price segment and is capable of increasing light sensitivity and reduce noise for taking good selfies in low-light also. This claim has been tested us and the camera performs quite decently even in fading or very less light. This phone sports an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash, BSI sensor, f/2.2 aperture. It comes with various filters and patterns to boost the image quality. This phone incorporates Beautify 4.0 technology which supports 7 different levels of intelligent beautification, with two modes for different skin tones to enhance the images. It is capable of full-HD (1080p) video recording and also has time lapse feature.

On the other hand, the new J5 of 2016 is equipped with 13MP rear camera with f/1.9 aperture, LED flash and a 5MP front facing camera with LED flash.

The other difference between the two phone is that Samsung has kept the needs of the bikers in mind and has loaded new J5 with S Bike Mode that allows riders to enjoy a tension free ride with unique features like urgent call alert and motion lock. It also comes with Ultra Data Saving mode whereby consumers can save up to 50% on mobile and Wi-Fi data.

The A37 of Oppo has light weight phone having a weight of just 136 grams compared to 159 grams of new J5. The Oppo A37 is well-designed phone and the back of the panel has been beautifully crafted with high quality aluminium which gives it elegant and expensive look. It has Gorilla Glass 4 protection for its display and its price is Rs. 11,990 which is Rs. 1000 moe compared to the J5 2016 which is selling at Rs. 12,990 and was launched at Rs. 13,990. I am sure that you will also get the A37 at lesser price from the retailers as Rs. 11,990 is its MRP.

If you are in the market for a mid-range phone, you have two beautiful choices in front of you. You can decide depending upon your requirements. But if you are looking for a good camera in a light-weight and well-designed phone then you must have a serious look at Oppo A37. You will definitely end up saving some money.
