As per the recently released Google Zeitgeist 2013, an annual review of the most searched terms around the world, India’s mobile internet users search for messaging and browsing tools more than any other type of app. In India, the “Most Searched Mobile App” category is dominated by popular messaging and browsing apps, with WhatsApp and UC Browser topping the rankings for the most number of searches on mobile in 2013.

Among the top 10 most searched mobile apps are 3 messaging tools and 2 browsers. With 30 million monthly active users in the country, messaging app WhatsApp took the top spot, while its competitors Skype and WeChat ranked fifth and seventh, respectively. UC Browser came in second place, followed by competitor Opera Mini. According to StatCounter, UC Browser overtook Opera as the most popular mobile browser in India during July of this year.

Rounding out the top 10 most searched mobile apps are Google Maps (fourth place), Dictionary (sixth place), MX Player (eighth place), Google Earth (ninth place) and Talking Tom (tenth place).

Commenting on this development, Mr. Kenny Ye, Managing Director of UCWeb India, said: “We are very excited about the India market. After making India our second headquarters two years ago, we have seen increasing popularity for UC Browser as a result of our proprietary data compression and cloud technologies allowing UC Browser to deliver the fastest, most powerful and best overall user experience in its category. UC Browser being the most searched mobile browser shows the extremely positive response we have received in India and justifies our localization strategy. Heading into 2014, we will continue to make mobile internet more accessible for India’s users and look to sustain our positive momentum in the mobile browser market.”
