On October 20, 2009, a new version of wordpress was released. This version has been released in order to further strengthen the security feature of wordpress. And for this reason the release version has been quoted as “WordPress 2.8.5: Hardening Release” as it has a number of security hardening features.
Some of the important features of version 2.8.5 are :
- A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
- Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
- Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
- Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.
Starting 20th October, 2009 you will start noticing a reminder from wordpress to update to latest version.

Because of the inclusion of major security features, it is recommended that all the users of wordpress version 2.8.4 or earlier to update to latest release asap.
